Two Dialogue Cafes in October

The "clash of cultures" and "globalization" are the two issues the Whistler Forum will tackle in two dialogue cafés during October.

Dr. Maurice Friedman will be the guest at "The Clash of Cultures" on Saturday, Oct. 2 from 7.30 p.m. at Millennium Place.

Friedman is professor emeritus of religious studies, philosophy, and comparative literature at San Diego State University.

He is the author of Martin Buber: The Life of Dialogue , and traces the influence Buber had on the Jewish-Arab understanding.

With William Roberts, Friedman will also address "the Huntington Thesis" and whether the clash of cultures and civilizations is inevitable.

University British Columbia economist Dr. John Helliwell will lead the second dialogue café on "Globalization, Whistler and Well-Being" in the Whistler chamber boardroom on Thursday, Oct. 14 from noon to 2 p.m.

Helliwell’s career includes consulting assignments to the World Bank, the White House and the Bank of Canada.

He was Mackenzie King Visiting Professor of Canadian Studies, Harvard University 1991-1994 and Fulbright Fellow and co-chair of Canada Program.

Lately, his interest has been in the economics of social capital and how building trust is vital to economic growth.

This dialogue café includes lunch and costs $10.
