Ultimate players net medals at nationals

Whistler didn’t send a team to the Canadian Ultimate Championships in Vancouver this year, but that didn’t stop some of the top players joining other teams in the city to battle for national titles.

Joey Houssian and Leslie Anthony, both of whom have been members of world championship teams, brought home gold medals in the open and masters divisions. Joey also received the "Toaster" MVP award, as voted by the team that lost in the finals.

Kevin McJanet also played in the Masters division, bringing home a silver medal.

Being among the top teams in Canada has a special meaning this year, with Canada bringing home three gold medals and three silver medals from the World Ultimate Championships in Finland this summer.

The Whistler Ultimate League wrapped up this week, but the players hope to hold a drop-in night through the end of summer and into the fall. Anyone is welcome to take part, and newcomers will be shown how to play.

The drop-in night will continue on Wednesday nights at Myrtle Philip until mid-September, before moving to Spruce Grove to play under the lights.
