Drowning victim recovered

The body of a young man who drowned after jumping into the Mamquam Waterfall on Sept. 11 has been recovered from Howe Sound near Woodfibre.

Two youths jumped into the falls, located near the BC Hydro power plant and got into difficulties because of the high water levels and current. One was rescued, the victim, an 18-year-old from Vancouver, did not survive. River conditions made it impossible for the body to be retrieved by emergency services.

The body was discovered by a local tugboat operator, who reported it to the police on Oct. 4. His identity was confirmed by the BC Coroner's Office on Oct. 7.

His family has been notified and his identity is not being released. Reports say he was a student at Quest University.
