University status could help knowledge industry

The Squamish Sustainability Corporation (SSC) applauded the province’s move to grant university designation to Capilano College this week.

“I gave a hoot when I heard that one,” said SSC director Brent Leigh. “It’s great news.”

According to Leigh, the designation will factor in the SSC’s knowledge-based industry strategy, an economic diversification initiative that could produce several sub-sectors. With core competency in fields like animation and film, Leigh says the university could play a role in training a specialized labour force for local employers.

The announcement came as the Liberal government revamped the University Act to give students better access to university level programming. Capilano College was one of five institutions to receive new university designation.
