School libraries beneficiaries
The May long weekend signals a time of change. Ski equipment is exchanged for golf clubs, gardening tools, mountain bikes and other weapons of minor destruction.
It’s also time for spring cleaning, for moving on, and for re-birth.
Those are all factors in this weekend’s used book sale to benefit the Whistler Secondary and Spring Creek elementary school libraries.
Hundreds of books – hard- and soft-cover fiction, classics, self-help, children’s books and magazines – have been donated by Whistler residents over the last few weeks, to collection bins at Nesters, the TD Bank and Myrtle Philip school and Whistler Secondary. The lifecycle of those books will continue through another generation of readers Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, at the sale at IGA Marketplace.
The used book sale has been a biannual event for the last couple of years and has been a big success, for buyers and for the schools.
"We’ve got the usual great assortment of books to chose from," said organizer Jane Reid, "but if someone wants to buy children’s books, this is the sale."
Some of the extra children’s books were donated in previous years but were in such good condition they were kept out of sales to be placed directly into the libraries. School librarians have now sorted through these books, taken what was appropriate for the libraries and returned others to this weekend’s sale.
The sale takes place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. All sales are by donation, and all proceeds will go to the libraries at Whistler Secondary school and the new Spring Creek elementary school.
