User fees for municipal parks remain unchanged

Fees for the use of municipal parks have not gone up.

There has been some confusion after people who use the parks and trails for fitness training heard a rumour that they may have to pay fees such as those paid by people or organizations who hold special events in local parks.

"None of the people who do that type of business have been paying." Said Bob Andrea, with the municipalities strategic alliances and events department.

"It is only when they ask for an exclusive use, where they would deny the public the space, that is when we would ask them to pay."

However, there may be a future discussion of some sort of fee for businesses that use the parks and trails as part of their for-profit operations.

"One could make a case that a private business for profit using a public park should contribute to its upkeep somehow, perhaps in the form of permit," said Andrea.

But any change is someway down the road when a new parks management plan is done.

"It is nothing imminent, it is not like tomorrow, or even in the next few months I would say," said Andrea.

"All we do is look at: is it safe for the public, are they requesting exclusive use of certain areas. That kind of common sense approach is what we are trying to use."
