An antique truck and trailer from Whistler’s early days as a
logging town were reported missing on Oct. 28 by the Whistler Museum and
Archives.
The vehicles were stored near the wastewater treatment plant,
just south of Function Junction, and neither was in working condition.
It’s unknown when the vehicles were taken, as some people
thought they were removed to make way for construction in the area. The RCMP
are investigating, but say it’s possible that the vehicles were stolen.
Last year one member of the Whistler Museum and Archives
society came upon a group of men who were using a front loader to remove the
vehicles, which they said they thought were abandoned. The member told them
that the vehicles were donated to the museum for their collection, and the men
left.
Whether the same people are responsible for the theft is
unknown, but the RCMP are looking for the public’s help in locating the missing
vehicles.
Jehanne Burns of the Whistler Museum and Archives said the
items had no value beyond their historical rarity.
“I don’t think they were taken for sale as antiques because of
their condition… but they do have a value in the significance of what they mean
for Whistler,” said Burns.
Burns said it would require heavy machinery and a large truck
to move the vehicles, and believes that it’s possible that someone may have
seen people removing the vehicles from the site.
