Valley Trail closing for water system upgrades

Rainbow section of trail will be gravel next summer

A section of Valley Trail, from Rainbow Park to the north end of Lorimer Road, will be closing on Monday, Sept. 8 until May 31, 2009 to allow for the installation of a new water pipeline. The pipeline is part of an upgrade to the 21 Mile Creek Water System, and will improve the capacity and safety of Whistler’s water system.

The pipeline will connect a new groundwater source in Rainbow Park to Whistler Village, and will follow the Valley Trail route.

Once the trail reopens, it will be maintained as a gravel bed trail to allow for compacting and settling before repaving will take place next September. The project also includes a new bridge to Rainbow Park near the rail crossing.

During construction, park users will have to access Rainbow Park via Alta Lake Road, which can be accessed through the Alpine Meadows subdivision or by following the dirt road past the gravel pits at the bottom of Lorimer Road. People are also advised to use caution around Rainbow Park and the end of Lorimer Road as construction vehicles will be using these areas.

There’s a chance that some or all of the trail could be open this winter for cross-country skiing, depending on the contractor’s schedule and weather conditions this fall. Updates will be posted as the information becomes available.
