'Value investor' to speak in Whistler tonight

With money on the mind of many a Whistlerite these days, the Whistler Forum for Leadership and Dialogue is bringing a value investor to speak about leadership.

Tim McElvaine is founder and president of McElvaine Investment Management Ltd., a firm that takes on clients interested in products of substance, rather than concentrate on the growth of its stock price.

Calling himself the "Big Frog" of his firm, McElvaine cut his teeth on the financial game after 15 years working for Peter Cundill, an investor who has made a fortune investing in penny stocks. Speaking in Whistler tonight (Nov. 4), he plans to pass on lessons in leadership from major investors such as Warren Buffett and John Templeton.

"I'm definitely a value investor," McElvaine said in an interview. "I try to buy something and try to buy a dollar bill for 50 cents, so to speak. That makes a good investment in my mind."

McElvaine is less interested in the kind of stock whose value will grow at light speed than he is in cheap stocks that people are selling.

The dialogue is to take place tonight, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. in the Spearhead Room at the Whistler Conference Centre. Tickets are $20 per person, $15 for Forum members.
