Vancouver police have nabbed 100 impaired drivers in just over three weeks.

The annual winter CounterAttack initiative began Nov. 29.

The majority of the 101 impaired driving investigations resulted in vehicles being impounded for up to 30 days.

“The holiday season is full of celebrations and we want people to enjoy themselves,” VPD spokesperson Const. Tania Visintin said in a news release. “Plan ahead if you are drinking or using drugs to ensure you have a safe way of getting home.”

Last week the city, MADD Canada and Preventable launched a campaign to highlight extended hours at parking lots across the city to allow holiday revellers added time to retrieve their vehicles the day after tying one on.

The 35 lots included in the initiative are spread across downtown, False Creek, Granville Island, Mount Pleasant, Kitsilano, Dunbar and in to East Vancouver.

In most city-owned lots, residents can extend their overnight parking until 6 p.m. the next day. At most of the city’s on-street parking, cars can be parked until 11 a.m. the next day.

Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of traffic fatalities in B.C.

Anyone who suspects an impaired driver should call 9-1-1 immediately.
