In many ways Whistler runs on volunteers, from the Village and Mountain Hosts that help tourists find their way around, to crews that support the events that draw thousands of visitors to town, to the many volunteer-assisted services that serve residents. There is no shortage of ways, or reasons, to get involved this winter.
You can walk and care for stray dogs and cats at WAG. Be a role model through Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Help stage a race for up and coming skiers with the Whistler Mountain Ski Club. Share snowboarding with street youth and First Nations with Big Sisters. Be part of the film industry with the Whistler Film Festival. Bird watch with the Whistler Naturalists. Hand out food to needy residents and families. Educate people about Whistler's history.
To connect people with volunteer opportunities like these, the community is hosting the first ever Whistler Volunteer Fair on Nov. 16, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre. The list of groups includes the Whistler Museum and Archives Society, Whistler Animals Galore (WAG animal shelter), Whistler Film Festival, WinterPride, Big Brothers/Sisters, Girl Guides, Whistler Mountain Ski Club, Village Host program, Whistler Community Services Society, Whistler Arts Council, Zero Ceiling, Whistler Public Library, Whistler Naturalists, Whistler Health Care Foundation, Rotary Club of Whistler Millennium, and Whistler Rotary among others.
