Volunteers needed for Sea to Sky trail

If you can lift rocks, you’re hired.

Cheakamus Challenge organizer Grant Lamont, — in co-operation with WORCA, North Shore trail builder Ross Kirkwood and local mountain bikers — is inviting volunteers to come out on June 9 and help clear a new section of trail that will bypass the current highway and railway track portion of Sea to Sky trail.

The short section of trail runs from the Cal-Cheak campground to the basalt columns (also known as French fry rocks) along the side of the highway.

According to Lamont, the old route posed a danger to cyclists who either took the highway or railway tracks on their way to the Cheakamus route. "We don’t know when Centra Gas is going to put a gas pipeline in there either, so we thought it was a good time to move the trail," said Lamont.

There will be refreshments and barbecues for the trail maintenance crew.

The group will meet at 9 a.m. at the basalt columns. For more information, call Grant Lamont at 938-1799.
