Money raised at Whistler Classic to help with capital campaign
This year the Telus Mobility Winter Classic raised over $145,000 for the Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation, which has already found a good home for the money.
This year, the foundation will contribute $400,000 to the capital campaign to build a new library and museum at the existing location on Main Street.
"Part of that funding is going to come from the Winter Classic and this year’s Founder’s Pass sales, and part from next year’s Founder’s Pass sales," says Louise Lundy, the executive director of the Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation.
The library will need $3 million in capital funding before they can break ground for the new facility.
The Resort Municipality of Whistler is chipping in another $2.5 million from this year’s capital spending for the facility, which is expected to cost more than $9.5 million. The plan is to have the new library and museum facility completed and open to the public in 2004.
The Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation will likely contribute more in the future, including funds from this year’s Whistler Classic, which included a "ski with a professional" day, a wine and cheese reception at the Westin Resort and Spa, a guess your time race and the 10 th anniversary gala dinner at the Roundhouse.
According to foundation president Dave Brownlie, "In total, over 800 people attended the three events, which wouldn’t have been possible without the energy and commitment of over 150 volunteers.
"We also extend our sincere thanks to our corporate sponsors, local business owners who donated over $50,000 in cash and over 280 auction items."
The Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation raises approximately $450,000 a year for registered non-profit charities in the Sea to Sky corridor, in the areas of health, human services, education, recreation, the arts, culture and the environment. This year’s application submission period is from April 1, 2002 to May 1, 2002.
