W-B, Rotary building disabled skiing partnership

Earlier this year Intrawest won the right to operate the Winter Park ski area in Colorado, but Winter Park has more in common with Whistler-Blackcomb than the Intrawest connection.

Winter Park is also the home of the largest disabled ski program in the United States. Whistler-Blackcomb wants to be the centre for disabled skiing in Canada.

Allied with Whistler-Blackcomb in their goal is the Whistler Rotary Club, which donated $5,000 to the Whistler Adaptive Ski Program this week. The donation is part of a $15,000 financial commitment the Rotary Club has made to upgrade the Adaptive Ski Program’s building at Olympic Station on Whistler Mountain.

Rotary volunteers have also donated a lot of their own time to upgrading the building and some, like Tom Waller, are Adaptive Ski volunteers.

The Whistler Adaptive Ski Program, including approximately 80 instructors and volunteers, helped more than 400 disabled people enjoy the mountains last year. They are hoping to double that number this winter.

In addition to the donation to the Adaptive Ski Program, the Whistler Rotary Club donated $1,680 to the Whistler Food Bank this week.

To date, Whistler Rotary Club members have donated $6,500 in food and cash to the food bank this year.
