Students with an interest in the arts, listen up! The Whistler Arts Council has been recognizing the artistic achievements of graduating students in visual, literary, performing and media arts since 1987, and this year is no exception.

They are now accepting applications for two arts awards, which are available to elementary and secondary school students from Whistler, Pemberton and Mt. Currie.

The Student Art Awards are given to graduating students with demonstrated achievement in the arts. An award of $500 is given to a graduating secondary student from Whistler, Pemberton or Mt. Currie, while $100 is awarded to a student from Myrtle Philip, Spring Creek, Signal Hill, École La Passerelle and L'École de La Vallée de Pemberton.

Students are asked to submit three to four recent works that were completed outside of the classroom, and will later need to present their work to a jury. The deadline for applicants is Friday, May 1.

The Summer Art Bursary is provided to a student in any grade at Myrtle Philip, Spring Creek, Whistler Secondary, Alta Lake, Signal Hill, Pemberton Secondary, École La Passerelle and L'École de La Vallée de Pemberton and Xit'olacw Community School who plan to attend an art camp this summer. Telluride comes to town

For the eighth year, Telluride's Mountainfilm Festival is returning to Whistler, bringing with it some amazing glimpses of adventure and culture from around the world.

The Mountainfilm program includes both short and long films, featuring a range of adventure sports, cultures, and remarkable individuals, all woven together by a Mountainfilm presenter, who provides context and commentary throughout the evening. This year, the event is sponsored by the Raynier Foundation, in support of the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation Environmental Fund.

The films will be screened at MY Millennium Place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8. Tickets are $15, and are available at MY Place or www.ticketmaster.ca .

An artful Easter

Two local artists are hosting a special art sale over Easter weekend, offering up a wide range of original art - everything from prints and pottery to clothing. Participating artists include Taka Sudo, Chili Thom, Pepe, The Incredible Amoeba and others. All items will be priced under $100.

Andrea Mueller, coordinator of the temporary Transition Space gallery located next to Domino's Pizza on Main Street, has teamed up with painter Vanessa Stark to organize this special two-day sale, which takes place on Saturday, April 11 and Sunday, April 12 from 1 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The event is not-for-profit, with proceeds being given back to participating artists and the remainder going towards organizing similar future events to benefit the local art community.
