Whistler appears to be on track in doing its part to reduce solid waste by 50 per cent by the year 2000. A report presented to Whistler council prior to Christmas estimates Whistler will have achieved a 52 per cent reduction in solid waste by 2000. In 1990 the provincial government set an objective for all regional districts to reduce solid waste by 50 per cent in 10 years. Whistler participated in the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District’s preparation of a solid waste management plan which was designed to achieve this goal. However, as solid waste volumes were not recorded in 1990, the plan estimated that Whistler generated 1.2 tonnes of waste per capita per year. The equivalent population was estimated at 50 per cent of the developed bed units. Municipal staff recently reviewed Whistler’s solid waste and recycling data to estimate the amount of material that is currently being diverted from the landfill. Most of the pertinent information is available, but not all. Some private companies are collecting and recycling materials such as grease and fats from restaurants and confidential papers which are shredded. Those materials have not been calculated into the current table. SLRD staff are currently reviewing the overall status of the regional district’s waste reduction efforts.
