Watch out for bears

Spring thaw sends bears hunting for food

Whistler residents are being warned to walk with friends, make noise and carry a flashlight at night if they are on the valley's trail system.

The warning comes after a person said he was pushed to the ground last weekend by a black bear on the valley trail near the village end of Whistler Golf Club.

"We had an incident where a person was walking home about 2 a.m. Friday morning and he was knocked to the ground by a bear and reported he was swatted a few times by the bear," said conservation officer Chris Doyle.

"We obviously investigated the incident though we weren't able to determine what bear was involved or what the potential motivation was other than a surprise encounter late at night.

"People should be cautious when they are walking the trails at night."

Doyle also asked that people secure all attractants around businesses and residences to prevent conflicts from occurring with bears.

"There is not much natural food right now," he said.

Bear conflicts can be reported 24-hours a day, seven days a week at 1 877 952 7277.
