Food Bank drive a success
By the time the Whistler And Valley Express (WAVE) bus pulled out of the Nesters Market parking lot en route to the Whistler Food Bank just before Christmas, it was stuffed with between $7,000 and $8,000 worth of groceries.
On Dec. 21, WAVE manager Scott Pass and driver David Overbeck collected food bank donations for eight hours. They got a boost early in the day from Whistler-Blackcomb employees, who raised about $2,500 in donations themselves during their annual Christmas Party.
A number of Nesters shoppers also contributed about $200 in cash, including two $50 donations.
"One of them was a local, and the other was a British guy on vacation who thought it was a great idea," said Pass.
The event was so successful that Pass is already planning to hold the Stuff The Bus food drive again next year.
"We raised a heck of a lot of food with only about two weeks notice, so I think we’ll be back again next year, and get the word out a lot sooner. People were particularly generous this year because of the slow start, but I think we could do even better," said Pass.
In the future, people will be able to make food donations on WAVE buses during the winter months.
