The Whistler Film Festival's (WFF) Summer Cinema Series is rocking on, having returned with originally scheduled family films after cancellations earlier this summer owing to extreme wildfire risks.

Wayne's World, starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, is the final film of the series and will be screened outdoors in the courtyard plaza beside Dusty's in Whistler Creekside on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 8 p.m. Attendees can bring their own chairs, though chairs will also be provided on a first come, first served basis.

WFF Summer Cinema Series is sponsored by Creekside Village, Creekside Dental, Creekside Market, Dusty's Bar and BBQ, Macdonald Realty, Scotiabank and Whistler Blackcomb.

The Whistler Writers Society has extended its annual Comedy Quickies writing contest deadline to Wednesday, Aug. 30.

The writing contest is an opportunity for finalists to show their work at an irreverent variety show during the Whistler Writers Festival, with all sorts of ideas welcomed to the stage.

Up to 10 of the funniest five-minute sketches, stand-up routines, original songs or monologues will be showcased at the Maury Young Arts Centre on Oct. 12, with competitors having the chance to win hundreds of dollars in cash and prizes.

Final call for Prior topsheet artists

Sea to Sky artists are invited to submit artwork for the annual Prior Topsheet competition and exhibition.

Those selected will see their artwork grace the 2018-19 lineup of Prior products, including skis, split skis and snowboards, and will win two pairs of skis or snowboards with their design as the topsheet.

The deadline is Sept. 1, with online voting for the 10 to 15 finalists running from Sept. 16 to Oct. 1. Two winners will be chosen by the voting public.

Beer fest says cheers! to local music

The Whistler Village Beer Festival is bringing in eight acts to perform during the festival's Main Event weekend on Sept. 16 and 17.

The WhiskeyDicks, Big Love Band, JennaMae and the Groove Section, DJ Billy the Kidd, Case of the Mondays, The McQuaid Trio, Red Chair, and Vancouver Island's Band of Rascals perform at Whistler Olympic Plaza.

"Band of Rascals has been playing festivals with huge acts like the Arkells and Big Wreck all summer long, and we're thrilled that they'll be capping off their tour by joining us in Whistler," says Tara Myers, Partnerships and Events Manager for festival organizer Gibbons Whistler, in a release.
