WB requiring helmets for all events this winter

Alpine ski racers will need buckets

For the 2010-2011 season, Whistler Blackcomb is expanding its helmet requirements, making them mandatory for all alpine racing events.

That means racers taking part in the Kokanee Valley Race Series, the Appleton Rum Peak to Valley Race, weekend Masters Races and other sanctioned events will require helmets to take part.

Helmets are already required for ski and snowboard cross events, Park Rider Sessions, King of the Rail jams and other freestyle events.

Last season Whistler Blackcomb expanded its list of programs that require a helmet to include all children and youth in Ski and Snowboard School programs and students in freestyle terrain park programs. As well, all youth instructors are required to wear helmets.

"Education about helmet usage, benefits and limitations, coupled with reminders of the obligation to ski and ride in a controlled and responsible manner, are important aspects of overall mountain safety," said Doug Forseth, senior vice-president of operations for Whistler Blackcomb.

Helmets are provided free of charge to children and youth in ski and snowboard rental packages.
