Chamber of Commerce Job Fair If you’ve missed your chance of employment with the mountains don’t despair, there is still salvation ahead. A whole new book of jobs will be available at the Chamber of Commerce Job Fair, scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 1 and Monday, Nov. 2. Employers registered for the fair include Club Intrawest, Whistler Hardware, McCoos, La Rúa, Coast Mountain Photography, Blue Highways Shiatsu and Massage and the Spa at Chateau Whistler. On Sunday job seekers are invited to attend between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. for mandatory screening sessions. "People should bear in mind that this is the morning the clocks go back, but it won’t hurt anyone’s chances to get there early. In fact it would be to their advantage." comments Michele Rideout, employment co-ordinator for the WCC Employment Centre. "There is a broad range of jobs available in retail, food and beverage and tourist services... The whole idea of the job fair is to match local employers with job seekers." The Chamber of Commerce Staff will be conducting the screening interviews with employers’ requirements in mind. "Obviously if someone is applying as a server they have to have a Serving it Right certificate. Beyond that basic qualities in this town are directed towards the service industry and customer service. Personality, presentation and communication skills are what we will be looking for." On Sunday job seekers will be able to view the opportunities on offer and pick their top three. Then they will have a screening interview. If they pass the interview they will be put forward for interviews with potential employers on the Monday. If job seekers are interested in more than three positions they can submit a resume which will be passed on to the employers for consideration after the job fair. Rideout advises that participants bring at least three copies of their current resume. "Also if they have written references we recommend they bring them along. A written reference helps their application better than a list of references." The job fair is still looking for volunteers. If you are interested in helping out call 932-6281. Similarly any employers who would like to scout for potential employees should call the same number to register.
