The winner is in – Next Episode by Hubert Aquin was chosen as the book Canadians should read. Nominated by broadcaster and author Denise Bombardier, this seminal Quebecois novel was first published in French in 1965. The current edition is translated by Sheila Fischman and is published by McClelland & Stewart. The choice of Next Episode is the culmination of a week long debate on CBC Radio held annually during Canada Book Week.
Readings from the book can be heard daily beginning Monday, May 12 on Between The Covers at 2:30 p.m. (during Richardson's Round Up) and at 10:40 p.m. (3 and 11:10 NT) on CBC Radio One. The readings continue until Friday, May 16. Respected Canadian actor Carl Marotte will read Next Episode.
The announcement of the People's Choice winner, an interview with the author of the winning People's Choice book and much more will be heard in the grand finale of Canada Reads. Hosted by Bill Richardson, it will be broadcast on Monday, May 19 during Richardson's Roundup at 2 p.m. (2:30 NT) on CBC Radio One.
Listeners can go to the Canada Reads Web site – www.cbc.ca/canadareads – to cast their vote at the Peoples Choice polling booth. Voting ends at midnight ET on May 15. They can also join the wide-ranging online book club discussion.
Arts and Culture Week
Arts and Culture Week is a celebration of British Columbia’s vibrant arts and culture sector. Now in its fourth year, Arts and Culture Week turns the spotlight on the vital contribution that arts and culture make to our quality of life. Music, films, media arts, dance, books, theatre and visual art are a part of daily life, and have a lasting impact. They inspire us, challenge us and broaden our horizons.
The arts and culture sector employs over 63,000 people in communities across B.C., with a growth rate three times the provincial average. The film and television industry alone brings in $2.82 billion to our economy. B.C. artists in all disciplines are recognized internationally as among the best. Each year, our museums, galleries, festivals and performances attract visitors from around the world.
The arts are definitely alive and well in Whistler, with a lineup of events for the month of May that rivals any town twice our size! At Maurice Young Millennium Place there will be a photographic exhibition by John Hewson, Carousel Theatre’s play My Game (May 1), Five Women Wearing the Same Dress (May 1-3), Jamie Jorge Cuban-American Violinist (May 4), Bye Bye Birdie (May 8, 10), guitarist Pavlo (May 9), Matchstick Movie (May 16), Whistler Naturalists speaker (May 22), Talent Show (May 24), Hoja a cappella group (May 30).
The Whistler Children’s Chorus will be performing on May 3 at the Catholic Church, the Children’s Art Festival will be held May 24/25 at Myrtle Philip Community School.
