The local downhill race series kicks off on Wednesday, June 23, with the first Phat Wednesday of the season in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. The course has yet to be announced, but the first ride is usually down a blue trail.

There are a total of six Phat Wednesday races on the calendar this year, with races also taking place on June 30, July 14, July 21, Aug. 18 and Sept. 1. To take part you must be a members of the Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association (WORCA), have a valid pass to ride the park and chip in $2 towards the prize pot.

Registration gets underway at 5 p.m. at Garbanzo Bike and Bean. Full-face helmets are mandatory, and body armor is strongly recommended. Also, you can join WORCA online at www.worca.com to speed up registration.

The number of entries is limited to 200 riders this year for logistic reasons, after over 230 riders turned out to a race last season on Crank It Up. The series averaged over 170 riders per race in 2009.

As well as the Phat Wednesday series, the bike park also confirmed that there are three PhaSt Wednesday races this year, taking place on July 7, July 28 and Aug. 25. The PhaSt Wednesday races take place on the more challenging trails in the park and are designed for expert level riders.
