Westin, Chateau make Conde Nast list

Whistler has again been ranked among the best in the world again and this time the kudos go to two hotels in town.

Whistler has again been ranked among the best in the world again and this time the kudos go to two hotels in town.

In a survey conducted by the American magazine Conde Nast Traveler, the Westin Resort & Spa in Whistler ranked 14 th and the Fairmont Chateau Whistler placed 18 th in the Top 30 resort properties in North America.

Another B.C. resort property, the Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino, came in sixth place in the same category.

The poll also rated Vancouver the 10 th best foreign city to visit. Vancouver faced some tough competition this year with three new cities entering the ranks of the best but the west coast city managed to hold its ground, slipping only one place from last year.

The three newcomers were Bangkok, Puerto Vallarta and Hong Kong, which forced out old favourites like Salzburg, Vienna and San Miguel de Allende.

Paris came in first place in the list, followed by Sydney, Rome and Florence.

The cities were rated on a variety of criteria including friendliness, nightlife, culture and ambience.

Helping Vancouver retain its spot among the best were its high marks in the accommodation category. Four hotels in the city were ranked among the Top 50 hotels in North America, including the Pan Pacific, Sheraton Suites Le Soleil, the Metropolitan and the Four Seasons.

And the Vancouver Four Seasons was also ranked among the hallowed numbers of the Top 100 hotels in the world, one of only two hotels in the country to reach that list (the other being the Toronto Four Seasons).

As if anything else was needed to tempt visitors to the west coast, Vancouver Island was ranked second in a poll on the favourite temperate locations in the world.

Scenery, food, lodging and friendliness all played a factor in that vote.

This year the annual Conde Nast Traveler survey polled approximately 29,000 readers.
