The Deep End gets funky at the Fish

Bass player Cory Curtis is a familiar face around these parts to those who frequent La Bocca for Liquid Jazz Thursdays.
Each week Curtis is joined by a different duo of fellow music students from Vancouver’s Capilano College for a night of jazzy grooves for late evening visitors to the restaurant. And while the eclectic Liquid Jazz repertoire is anything but mild, the venue and circumstances call for a chill-out sort of vibe.
Curtis makes a special trip up this Tuesday as part of seven-piece funk collective The Deep End, whose sound is anything but chill restaurant jazz.
Too much band for La Bocca, The Deep End will go down below to Maxx Fish to throw down their high-energy funk and soul covers – everything from classics by Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind & Fire to more modern offerings by Beyoncé, Jamiroquai and Erykah Badu.
The band also draws its members out of the deep talent well at Cap College. Together for the last two years, The Deep End honed its skills with regular appearances at Vancouver’s railway club last summer.
Curtis describes the Deep End sound as "good time dance music." The band features vocalist Dawn Pemberton, who can hold her own on tunes by Aretha Franklin and other legendary female singers the band covers.
The Deep End goes downstairs for a night of deep down and dirty funk at Maxx Fish this Tuesday.

Moe funk
The boogie doesn’t end after Tuesday’s Deep End show.
On Wednesday funksters can head to Moe Joe’s for Vancouver band Everyday People. The People throw down funk and dirty disco classic covers with the odd Sublime or Eminem snippet thrown in for spice.

Even mo’ Funk
And on the topic of Funk, local musician Rob Funk is one of the hardest working men in this town. The easy-going guitar and keyboard player is a Friday night fixture at Black’s Pub. On weekend afternoons he’s Whistler’s equivalent of the Kids in the Hall’s Flying Pig, entertaining customers in the latte line at The Second Cup. Then he’s back at the coffee shop on Monday evenings hosting an all ages instrument jam and open mic session.
Funk is also a regular après ski and evening performer in the Mallard Lounge at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.
That, my friends, is a lotta Funk.
