Make Jewelry at The Point

Whether you're a crafty kid or an adult with interest in handmade gems, The Point Artist-Run Centre has unique workshops for you beginning this week.

After-school jewelry making workshops began May 8 and run every Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. until June 19. "The students are encouraged to work with metals such as copper and brass, semi-precious stones, crystals and glass beads to create wearable art objects such as rings, pendants, earrings and bracelets," says artist instructor Aude Ray in a release.

The classes are open to kids ages 8 to 11, though younger children are welcome if they're accompanied by an adult.

Think jewelry making sounds like a blast, but you lack a kid to get you into the after school class? Don't worry, there's a session for teens (over 12) and adults also on Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Also, keep an eye out for Ray's Expressive Arts workshops running during summer holidays. The sessions offer musical and theatre creation, fashion design, painting and a variety of other mediums for kids to try out. They're set to run Tuesday and Wednesdays from July 9 to Aug. 14 with different sessions for kids, teens and adults. Register at www.thepointartists.com.

Make mom a gift

Mom's can be tough to shop for.

After all, flowers die, tastes change and jewelry — well, jewelry is a pretty nice gift. Maybe go with that. But if you're looking for a unique, handmade gift for mom this Mother's Day (it's May 12, don't forget!) Fathom Stone Art Gallery & Studio in Whistler is offering carving classes.

The studio is offering discount classes for 1 hour ($40), 3 hour ($55), or 6 – 8 hour ($185) classes. Carve an Inukshuk, jewelry or a (mama) bear. Or bring mom along for some creative bonding.

For more information, give them a call at 604-962-7722.

Drum making workshop

The Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre is hosting a drum-making workshop on Sunday.

The session will be led by Alice Guss, who will help participants make a sacred drum while sharing songs and telling stories.

"Our culture teaches us that the more drums (are) played, the more harmony, connection and understand we have of one mind, one body and one spirit," the SLCC says in a release.

People of all ages and abilities are welcome to take part. The workshop begins at 1 p.m. and runs until 3 p.m. Supplies are included in the $150 price. For more information or to register email tsawaysia@hotmail.com.
