British singer-songwriter Sam Smith landed with a thump on the music scene in 2014 with his album In the Lonely Hour. He took home four Grammys this year, including Best Pop Vocal Album and Song of the Year for "Stay With Me." He calls Adele and Amy Winehouse his main influences.

A$AP Rocky — part of the hip-hop collective A$AP Mob — is from New York. His second album At. Long. Last. came out this year and debuted at No. 1. He has won three BET awards.

Alabama Shakes
Rock band Alabama Shakes formed in 2009 with Steve Johnson, Brittany Howard, Heath Fogg, Zac Cockrell and Ben Tanner. Their current album Sound and Color debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 earlier this year and they won Americana Music Honors and Award for Emerging Artist in 2012.

Toronto rapper Drake is fresh off his OVO Fest concert in his hometown alongside pals Kanye West and Will Smith. A Degrassi: The Next Generation alumni, Drake is often in the news for his antics off stage as well as his music onstage.

Of Monsters and Men
The Icelandic indie folk-popsters are touring to promote their new album Beneath the Skin, their second studio album. The band won the Músíktilraunir in 2010, an annual battle of the bands competition in Iceland, likely the only band at SVMF this year to do so.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
If you take your garage rock or psychedelia dark, black even, this three-piece San Francisco band's most recent album Specter at the Feast came out in 2013, though a live album recorded in Paris came out this year.

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings
Spearheading the revivalist movement of funk and soul, those who love the '60s and '70s sound will love Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. They were nominated for their first Grammy this year for Best R&B Album for Give the People What They Want.

Whitehorse
Husband and wife folk rock duo Whitehorse released their third album, Leave No Bridge Unburned, earlier this year. The Hamilton band present a full-band sound using live loops, bits and pieces percussion, and swapping guitars left, right and centre onstage.
