Whistler advanced poll turn-out way up

Next advanced poll Nov.12, election Nov.19

Voter turn out in Whistler's first advanced poll, Nov.9, showed an increase of 23 per cent over turnout in the last election in 2008.

The next advanced voting opportunity will be held on Saturday, November 12, with general voting day the following week on Saturday, November 19. The advanced votiing will be held at municipal hall.

In 2008, at total of 2903 constituents voted in the Whistler Municipal Election.

"With the results from the first advance poll in and the popularity of the mail ballot voting, early indications are that overall voter numbers will increase for 2011," states a press release from the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW).

In the past, the RMOW has held two special voting opportunities in West Vancouver for non-resident property owners located in the Lower Mainland.

This year, however, there will be no West Vancouver poll since mail-in ballot voting will provide Whistler's non-resident property owners with a new way to vote.

Mail ballot voting was legislated by the Province of B.C. in time for the last election and was passed through the Provincial Legislature on March 31, 2008.

Out of the 189 local governments in B.C., 37 instituted mail ballot voting in 2008.

This is the first election where Whistler is offering mail-in voting to its constituents.

To date, approximately 475 mail ballots have been received and processed by the Chief Election Officer.
