Whistler athletes halfway there

Whistler’s long distance athletes split up this weekend, with one group participating in the Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon and the other group racing in the New Balance Half Iron triathlon in Victoria on June 23.

Vancouver Half Marathon Results

About 1,750 athletes participated in the half marathon, running just over 21 kilometres. Among them were 14 locals.

Kevin Titus led the way, finishing first in the 45 to 49 Masters division and ninth overall with a time of one hour 12 minutes, five seconds. To put that time into perspective, the top four runners in the race were professional runners from Africa. Enos Ketter of Kenya posted the fastest time in 1:04:18.

John Hall, with a time of 1:36:01, was 181 st overall and 29 th out of 122 runners in the men’s 35 to 39 race.

Chuck Giles was 13 th out of 19 in the men’s 20 to 24 division with his time of 1:45:28.

Micah Koroll was 36 th out of 87 runners in the men’s 25 to 29 race with his time of 1:46:51.

Georgina Titus posted a time of 1:47:17, which was good enough to finish 27 th out of 198 racers in the women’s 35 to 39 age category.

Susan Belyea was 22 nd out of 53 in the women’s 20 to 24 race with her time of 1:47:23.

Diane Duggan was 9 th out of 117 in the women’s 45 to 49 race with her time of 1:49:03.

Tim Elford finished 46 th out of 87 entries in the men’s 25 to 29 race with a time of 1:50:47.

Connie Sobchak, with a time of 1:51:40, was 41 st out of 169 competitors in the 40 to 44 group.

Megan Wastle was 76 th out of 162 in the 25 to 29 division with a time of 1:57:47.

Richard Shallrd posted a time of 1:58:14 to finish 107 th out of 139 in the 40 to 44 group.

Jacqui Tyler, 20 th out of 54 in the women’s 50 to 54 race broke the two hour mark with her time of 1:59:53.

Mike Knapton, 110 out of 122 in the 35 to 39 race, finished in 2:10:30.

Nancy Routley was 144 th out of 169 in the 40 to 44 race with her time of 2:20:14.

New Balance Half Iron Results

Some 538 athletes turned out to race in this half Ironman competition, which was a qualifier for the upcoming Ironman Canada race in Penticton. The Half Iron includes a 2 kilometre swim, a 90 km bike ride, and a 20 km run.

Paul Nicholas, racing with the Whistler Triathlon Club, finished 61 st overall, and 17 th out of 83 athletes in the men’s 30 to 34 race with a total time of four hours 53 minutes 24 seconds. In the same division in 28 th position was Francois Fournier, 112 th overall in 5:05:19.

Keeping pace was Daniel Havens, who was 113 th overall and sixth out of 42 racers in the men’s 45 to 49 race with a time of 5:05:43.

Paul Suter, who competed in the Test of Metal mountain bike race the day before, was 125 th overall in 5:08:12 and ninth out of 53 athletes in the men’s 40 to 44 race.

David Higgins was 49 th in the 30 to 34 division, and 191 st overall with a time of 5:18:32.

Mae Palm, competing in the 60 and over category, finished with a time of 6:25:17. With only one other racer in her age division, she once again qualified for Ironman Canada.

Brandi Higgins finished in 6:33:55, or 477 th overall.

Mae Palm was the only Whistler athlete who wasn’t a member of the Whistler Triathlon Club.
