Whistler bidding for X Games Global Championships

Whistler was not in the running to host the ESPN Winter X Games, as the Aspen Times reported this week.

Whistler is however bidding to once again host the X Games Global Championships, which debuted in Whistler and San Antonio last May and are being held every two years.

"Our next meeting with ESPN is to try and secure that event for the future," said Stuart Rempel, vice president of marketing and sales for Whistler-Blackcomb.

The X Games Global Championships are a variation of the X Games format, pitching six countries and regions of the world against one another in selected Summer and Winter X Games events. Each region supplies a maximum of two athletes to each event.

Whistler once again wants to host the winter ski and snowboard superpipe events. The summer events, including skateboarding, BMX and motocross, will take place at another venue.

ESPN announced a deal with Aspen this week for the Colorado resort to host the Winter X Games through 2007.
