Whistler-Blackcomb nears snowfall record

Ullr, the Norse God of snow, is back after taking a vacation out east last winter, gracing Whistler with early season snowfall conditions that are expected to break the existing December snowfall records with a week to spare.

The previous December mark of 389 cm – approximately 150 inches or 12 and a half feet – was set in the winter of 1994-95.

On each of the last three Saturdays the resort has been hit with a minimum of 48 centimetres of snow, and with the aid of some serious mid-week storms, as of Dec. 18 the current measured accumulation is 358 centimetres, or 141 inches.

"I have reported on some huge snowfalls over the years, but nothing like this," said Chris Strome, the voice of the morning snowphone report. "In the last week, Whistler-Blackcomb has received almost two metres of snow. We’re on pace to shatter the December record."

In the seven days leading up to Dec. 18, Whistler-Blackcomb received 198 centimetres of snow, or 78 inches, and the settled based exceeds two metres in most places.

And Environment Canada is calling for continuing snowfalls.
