Whistler-Blackcomb support keeps employment centre open

The Whistler Chamber of Commerce’s employment centre is safe in its Creekside location until it moves to its new building, thanks to a donation by Whistler-Blackcomb.

Funding cuts by the federal government had put the chamber’s employment centre operations at Creekside at risk for the next couple of months.

But a $5,000 donation by Whistler-Blackcomb will keep the employment centre open until the chamber moves to its new home in the village in March.

"It was good of Whistler-Blackcomb to step up," said Brent Leigh, president of the chamber.

"It heard the news and it wanted to respond immediately."

Leigh is concerned that eroding the employment services offered in the resort will in the long run erode the community.

That is something the chamber does not want to see and Leigh said everyone is working hard to make sure all appropriate services are kept in place despite government cut backs.

While Whistler-Blackcomb takes care of its own staffing, Doug Forseth, vice president of operations, still believes supporting the chamber’s employment work is important.

"We have a lot of ebb and flow with people coming and going and an employment centre is an important part of our business community over all," said Forseth.

"It is the way we look at it here. Whether guests are in a facility we own and operate or not, when they come to the resort they think they are in Whistler and if they came for skiing they associate all the services with the skiing, whether or not we do it.

"So it is important that those other services are provided and that they are provided and staffed properly and that the guests has a great experience overall.

"If not they won’t be back to ski on our mountains."
