Whistler Cup draws Olympic hopeful, huge turnout

It was a perfect day for a loppet. The sun was up, the air was cold, and the snow was hard and fast. Although a few dogs took exception to the starter pistol, Sunday’s 24 th annual Chateau Whistler Cup Loppet couldn’t have gone much better.

Some 284 competitors turned out to the event, including 86 Jackrabbits – kids aged 13 and younger. As one of the longest running events in the valley, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Cup cross-country loppet attracts its share of visitors to the resort.

David and Margaret De Gama travelled all the way from Warburton, Australia to participate. Meyer Costman. The oldest competitor at 74, hails from Winnepeg. Loppet veterans Nello and Jenny Busdon, former Whistlerites who moved to Sun Valley, also made the trip.

The fastest time of the day in the 30 kilometre race belonged to Glenn Bond, a 27-year-old Olympic hopeful who travels with the national team and lives at Silver Star Mountain.
