While there may be some confusion over whether to count the two people living in the sauna as tenants, the 2001 census is important for Whistler and all Canadian communities.
The census is used as a basis to budget and plan for community services, including schools, roads, public transportation, and a wide range of other services.
B.C. loses about $1,000 per person in federal transfer payments for every person not counted in the census, which costs municipalities millions of dollars. Since B.C. had the lowest mail returns of census forms of any province in 1996, local governments are already working on a campaign to convince British Columbians that it’s in their best interest to participate on Census Day, May 15.
To make sure that Whistler, one of the fastest growing communities in the province, is well represented the Resort Municipality of Whistler is holding a regional 2001 census presentation for all Whistler stakeholders on Feb. 23 at the Whistler Conference Centre in the Jordan Room.
The presentation, which is a joint effort between Statistics Canada and the municipality, will run one hour, from 11 a.m. to noon. Organizers are asking stakeholders to RSVP by Feb. 21.
More than 11.8 million homes and 276,000 farms across the country will participate in the census.
