The theme for this year is Beach Party, and all of the gymnasts will be putting on performances, including some of their award-winning routines, for family and friends.
"This is an opportunity for some of the younger kids to show off what they learned this year, and for the older kids to show their progression," said program director Tami Ross.
"We had another good year as a club, and our competition gymnasts once again held their own in meets around the province. We had a few girls in the B.C. Winter Games this year, and a few girls who are doing Level 3 tricks now.
"We’ve never really had that before because of the limited gym time and space, and it’s exciting because these girls are role models for the younger gymnasts."
Ross says the board of directors did an excellent job this year and the parents really stepped up to help out the club. The coaches were also excellent and worked together to keep the club fun and the athletes progressing.
"We had a few challenges, some injuries and some people leaving, but overall it was another great season and we we’re working on ways to make next year even better," said Ross.
Whistler Gymnastics’ biggest challenge remains the fact that they are still a set-up and take-down club, which means that they have to unpack and store all of their equipment at the beginning and end of every session. That’s hard on the equipment, the coaches, the kids and the parents that help out.
The club is still looking at options for moving into a more permanent facility, and is currently working with other potential user groups – alpine and freestyle skiers, snowboarders, the Whistler Dance Academy, martial arts clubs, schools and more – to develop a plan.
"A lot of parents and board members are working on this, but it’s going to take time and money. Right now we’re making the best of what we have and getting great support from the community," said Ross. "It’s been amazing."
The year-end show takes place in the Whistler Secondary School Gymnasium on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
There will be opportunities at the show to sign up for next year. Some sessions fill up quickly so the club suggests registering early.
In addition, parents will be able to sign up their children for summer gymnastics sessions which will run from July 5 to 9 and Aug. 16 to 20, and are open to all kids age six and up at all abilities.
