Whistler gymnasts on the podium

Impressive season start-up

The Whistler Gymnastics Club kicked off its season this past weekend with a warm-up competition on Bowen Island.

In the Kids In Progress contest, where athletes receive either gold, silver or bronze medals for compulsory skills, Jessie Budge and Keely Wentzel led the way with four gold medals each, while Cambria Willis had three gold medals and one silver, Ellie Krasny one gold and three silver, Carlin Mann four silver, Tatiana Fogarty two silver and two bronze, Martina Gershon three silver, Kalea Ranger and Annisa Ilham one silver and two bronze, And Iyla Nordin three bronze.

In Level 2 Tyro, Hannah Raffler placed first all around with golds on vault and bars and a silver on the beam. Maye Akama won silver on the vault and bars and gold on the beam.

In Level 2 Open, Nicole Halliwell was first on vault, bars and beam to place first all around, while Sonya D’artois was second on vault and beam, and first on bars to place second.

In Level 2 Novice, Lenka Prochazka was first all around with gold medals on bars and beam, and a silver on vault. Meg Halliwell was second, earning silver on bars and beam, and Desirae Smith third with bronze medals on vault and beam. Jasmine Budge earned a bronze on the vault, Victoria Jazic earned bronze on the bars, and Tyece Fairweather won gold on vault.

In Level 1 Tyro, Alexandra Shuker was first all around with a gold on vault and bars and a bronze on beam. Cate Sproule earned a silver on vault and was first on beam to place second, while Jenya Nordic earned a bronze on vault and silver on beam to finish third. Averi Willis won a silver on vault, Garbrielle LaBerge earned a silver on bars, and Callie Brougham earned a bronze on bars.

In Level 1 Novice, Rachel Warner was second all around, placing second on vault, bars and beam.

In Level I Argo, Alie Mariott was third all around, placing first on bars and third n beam. Maxine Shuster earned a bronze on vault.

Special awards were also presented to the top provincial level athletes. Sonya D’artois won the Beautiful Beam award, Nicola Halliwell the Flying Vault, and Lenka Prochazka the Super Swinger for her bar routine.

The club’s next competition, the Zone 5 Championships April 13-14, will be a lot harder with a floor component and top clubs from the Lower Mainland. The top athletes will qualify for the B.C. Championships at the end of April.
