The Whistler Storm high school mountain bike team hosted the fourth event in the North Shore Mountain Bike League series on May 9, staking out a course in Lost Lake Park that included a mix of doubletrack climbs, pea gravel and singletrack.

Unlike last year when riders and volunteer parents actually had to chip a course through the snowpack to open up trails, Whistler riders have had a lot of time to prepare for this event — and it showed.

In Bantan Boys (Grade 8) Finn Iles placed first overall ahead of Jacob Howitt from Argyle and Hunter Verner from Don Ross in Squamish. Teammates Chase Velenosi and Joshua Marangoni were sixth and seventh and Alex Schreyer 13th in a category that included 31 racers.

In Bantam Girls, Stephanie Denroche was the only Whistler athlete, placing first ahead of Kei Gray and Cameron Larson from Don Ross.

In Juvenile Boys, Sean Fincham and Michael Kilby from Don Ross were first and second, followed by Magnus Manson from Chatelech. The top Whistler rider was Alex Auger in fifth, with Julian Gagne placing sixth, Liam McIvor eighth and Eduardo Sanches-Woodworth 13th.

In Juvenile Girls (Grade 9), Emily Wharin of Whistler placed first, followed by Callista Ryan from Don Ross and Kate Boddington from West Vancouver.

Conrad Murdoch won the Junior Boys (Grade 10) race, followed by Harry Head from Howe Sound and Jack Almond from Collingwood. Patrick Wuenderich and Max Peiffer were fourth and fifth for Whistler.

In Junior Girls, Whistler's Georgia Astle placed first, followed by Mikayla Martin of Howe Sound, Sage Randle of Chatelech and Jewel George of Whistler.

In Junior Boys (Grades 10 and 11), there were 32 racers. The top Whistler rider was Isaac Marangoni in eighth. Sammy Leumann of Seycove placed first, followed by Jacques Martiquet from Chatelech and Blake Ramsden from West Vancouver.

In Senior Girls, Whistler's Jennifer McTavish and Lauren Doak were first and third, with Emily Duncan Hansen of Chatelech placing second.

The last event for the team was the North Shore Mountain Bike League championship on May 15, to be followed by the provincial high school championships on May 25 at Bert Finn Park in Port Moody.
