Since its beginning, the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival has showcased the best and brightest in extreme snowsports. This year they will also showcase the newest as well, with the addition of the Snowskate Rumble to the calendar.
A snowskate is slightly larger than a skateboard, a lot smaller than a snowboard, and doesn’t have any bindings attached. Snowskaters use them to imitate skateboard tricks on the snow, jumping and riding park obstacles.
It’s new, difficult and a little bit dangerous, so of course it’s catching on like wildfire.
The Rumble course will feature custom obstacles designed by Whistler snowskater Chris Jones and other locals into the sport. The Jibzone rails, rooftops and stairs will also be used, although redesigned to snowskate heights.
There are no restrictions for entry, and there are thousands of dollars in cash and prizes up for grabs.
There will also be a Snowskate Industry Expo and Party on the patio of the GLC.
Registration is $25, including a T-shirt.
The event takes place on April 14, starting with the warm up from 11 a.m. to noon. A contest jam runs from noon to 1 p.m., followed by the elimination rounds. The finals are scheduled to start around 2:15 p.m.
Afterwards there will be an awards ceremony, followed by the evening’s entertainment and a Snowskate party at the GLC. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door, and the entertainment will be provided by the Stir Fry Collective, Degree One and DJ Anger.
