Whistler’s Under 10 soccer teams hosted an inaugural regional tournament at home last Saturday, with teams from Pemberton and North and West Vancouver taking park.

The eight and nine year olds played at Myrtle Philip fields, undaunted by the downpour.

Despite the short notice and the absence of regular coaches, Donna Hutchinson in Whistler and Ted Gobert in Pemberton were able to find enough support to enter both girls and boys teams in the tournament.

In the girls’ division, the North Vancouver Quakes came through undefeated in four games, with the West Vancouver Strikers in a strong second place. The Pemberton Panthers and Whistler Wolverines played hard, but couldn’t beat the better organized visiting teams.

For the boys, the West Vancouver Shooting Stars also went undefeated in four games, followed by the West Vancouver Warriors. The Pemberton Tigers finished third, followed by the Whistler Foxes and Pemberton Lions in a tie for fourth.

Whistler-Blackcomb and Nesters Market contributed a great barbecue to finish the day, and juggler Mike Battie provided the evening’s entertainment.

Whistler Youth Soccer also thanks Whistler-Blackcomb for donating a generous raffle prize of a child’s season pass.

Next year organizers are hoping to include older teams at the elementary school level in the tournament.

The Whistler youth soccer season isn’t over yet. Whistler will be hosting the B.C. High School Provincial Boys "A" Soccer Championships from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1.
