Whistler K1’s on top in provincials 

The weather could have been nicer for the CIBC Wood Gundy K1 Provincials at Mount Washington this past weekend, but things couldn’t have gotten much better for the Whistler Mountain Ski Club.

The WMSC team won medals in every event but one as they faced the top alpine skiers in the age 11 and 12 K1 category from around B.C. All told there were more than 90 boys and 75 girls in the competition.

In the first men’s giant slalom, Benjamin MacLean, Morgan Pridy and Sam Gibson finished second, third and fourth respectively, and Zachary Nash was sixth to give the club four racers in the top-10. David Sandberg and Ian-Spence Morrison rounded out the top-15, finishing 11 th and 15 th , and Michael Dekur just missed the cut in 16 th .

The gold medal went to Sasha Zaitsoff of Red Mountain, who finished almost two seconds ahead of MacLean.

In the first women’s slalom, Whistler’s Victoria Whitney claimed the gold medal ahead of teammate Brynne Benbow. Brittany McGovern was fourth, Abbie Cameron sixth, Sara Ho eighth, Rachelle Morris 10 th , Nancy Bayly 13 th , and Emma Baker 14 th to give Whistler eight out of the top-15 positions.

In the second women’s slalom, Whistler’s Brooke Milne and Brittany McGovern took the gold and silver medals. Brynne Benbow was fourth, Victoria Whitney fifth, Rachelle Morris ninth, Sara Ho 11 th , and Emma Baker 13 th to round out the top 15.

In the first men’s slalom race, Whistler’s Morgan Pridy took the gold medal, while his teammate Sam Gibson came home with the bronze.

David Sandberg was fifth for the club.

In the second slalom, MacLean was once again the top Whistler racer, finishing fifth overall. Zackary Nash and Sam Gibson were eighth and ninth.

The next test for the K1’s is the annual Sierra Wireless Air Canada Whistler Cup from April 4 to 6 against races from more than 20 countries.
