Who or what are Whistler’s legends?

The Resort Municipality of Whistler is asking residents to help create a list of legendary events, places, features and characters of the resort community for a public art piece to be installed in Village Square this spring during its reconstruction.

The project involves 11 cast glass blocks, each interpreting the story of one legend. The text, symbols, sayings, icons and artifacts that best capture the essence of the legend will be cast and inscribed in the glass and surrounding pavement in Village Square.

Whistler residents will have an opportunity to help create the list by responding to notices posted at the library, museum, municipal hall and other community facilities. Also, advertisements will be placed in the local media. An advisory group has been formed to nominate candidates, as well as review and select the final list. The advisory group includes representatives of the Museum and Archives Society, the Whistler Library, Arts Council, Rotary Club, Whistler-Blackcomb, Public Art Committee and municipal staff. The deadline for nominations is Feb. 14, 2004.

The idea for this project came from the Village Square design process. One of the design consultants, Denise Cook, was commissioned to lead the project. Through consultation with the Public Art Committee, the concept of celebrating Whistler’s legends was developed. The Village Square glass features will be the initial implementation stage. The list of legends will be retained as an archive, and other legends will be interpreted through other art projects.
