Whistler marks World Water Day

SFU prof to speak

Water is a hot topic in Whistler this year as the municipality moves ahead with plans to partially privatize the sewage treatment plant in the face of outspoken public opposition.

With all this recent interest in water, local resident Pina Belperio is hoping residents will turn out to learn more about water on World Water Day – Wednesday, March 22.

"The goal of World Water Day is to remind people of the value of water and to express the need to maintain safe, clean public water," said Belperio.

Three community groups, the Council of Canadians, AWARE and Whistler Water Watch, are hosting the evening.

It will include several facets of water in the 21 st century, from using water for energy to selling water globally and privatizing water systems.

Dr. John Calvert, adjunct professor at Simon Fraser University, will speak about water in relation to B.C.’s electricity system and water licences on B.C.’s rivers.

His talk will be followed by a screening of the documentary Thirst . The film looks at the global corporate takeover of fresh water with stories from Bolivia, India and the U.S.

Everyone is welcome to attend the evening about water at Millennium Place. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation.
