November can be a tough month in Whistler as people, particularly newcomers, wait for the snow to fly, the lifts to open, jobs to kick in and paycheques to be issued.

The November squeeze has been part of the seasonal cycle in Whistler for years. It existed back in 1993 when Tom Horler’s McDonald’s restaurant was the first business to open in Whistler Marketplace.

To celebrate 10 years in Whistler, and recognizing the financial pressures many people are under at this time of year, the Whistler McDonald’s is selling hamburgers for 10 cents for the first 10 days of November.

"It’s to thank the community for a great 10 years and because it’s the time of year when the food bank is hit hardest," Horler said of the promotion.

From Nov. 1 to 10 hamburgers will be sold for 10 cents with the purchase of any size fries and drink.

"Giving back to the communities where McDonald’s operates is a core mandate of the company, something I take very seriously," said Horler. "Through the years, I’ve worked to offer support whenever I can."

Horler has been involved in a number of sports, social, and community groups since he arrived in Whistler. Through Ronald McDonald House Charities, McDonald’s has donated more than $180,000 to local community groups including the Whistler Rotary Learning Disabilities Foundation, the Whistler Health Care Centre, Whistler Children’s Fund and many more.

Horler owns and operates the Whistler and Pemberton McDonald’s franchises. Prior to becoming an owner-operator, he held a number of mid and senior management position with McDonald’s including Director of Marketing — Asia Pacific, overseeing 14 countries.
