Whistler Nordics Loppet draws a crowd

Although the organizers were nervous after a change of dates and venues, the turnout to the 27 th annual Whistler Nordics Loppet was close to a new record with 170 participants taking part.

Although the organizers were nervous after a change of dates and venues, the turnout to the 27 th annual Whistler Nordics Loppet was close to a new record with 170 participants taking part.

The Jackrabbits, skiers 13 and younger, were a large part of the total with 61 racers making a lap of the Nicklaus North Golf Course track.

Tom Barratt, who was the chief organizer of the event for the first time this season said it couldn’t have gone much better.

"It was a great event. Part of the reason was that the weather was awesome, and the course was equally awesome – your skis always dug in, and it didn’t get icy or lumpy," said Barratt.

The new start, finish and awards location at Nicklaus North also worked well, and Barratt thanked the club for their support and enthusiasm in hosting more than 170 racers, plus volunteers, spectators and organizers.

Because the race was no longer starting at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, the recreational and age category racers had to cross the train tracks at one point. A train did pass through about an hour into the race which affected the outcome for some of the participants.

"Luckily all the competitive racers were ahead of it at that time, but it was a problem for some of the recreational racers," Barratt said. "We’re going to have a stopwatch there next year, because it’s something we’re going to have to deal with again."

The Whistler Nordics asked participants for feedback after the race, and will be incorporating some of the suggestions in next year’s event.

"It was a good race for us for the most part. We had a little more work this year because of the new venue, but we’re happy with it, and a good time was had by all."
