Whistler Nordics seeking coaches, volunteers

Masters group is 'tapped out'

With membership numbers increasing year after year and more demand for programming, the Whistler Nordics are looking for additional coaches and volunteers to help the club continue to grow.

According to Brent Murdoch, all of the club's programs are currently booked.

"We've been so successful in building the club that we're tapped out in the masters groups and all the kids programs are tapped out to the point where to grow any more we'll need to get more coaches out, more volunteers out - be it parents or people that have taken a coaching course."

The club has only one paid coach at this point, with volunteers providing programming for more than 80 kids of all ages and up to 40 masters. There are also 11 teens registered in the Whistler Nordics Devo program, the club's youth development team.

Volunteer coaches will need to take a Cross-Country B.C.-sanctioned coaching course, although the club is also looking for parents to assist the current group of coaches - especially with the younger age groups where coaches need help organizing the skiers.

The club has attracted some interest from out-of-town volunteers recently, including coaches from Sweden and New Zealand who are in Whistler this season for the Olympics.

"That has really helped us a lot for this season, especially with so many youth registering this year," said Murdoch. "Clubs in B.C. are almost entirely volunteer-driven, we couldn't do anything without people stepping up."

Provincially-sanctioned coaching clinics are available throughout the winter, including a Community Coaching Workshop that takes place this week (Dec. 4-5) for Whistler and Squamish. Another Learning to Train Workshop for youth coaches is scheduled for the New Year, running Jan. 1-3. For more information or registration contact Whistler Nordics administrator Suki Cheyne at info@whistlernordics.com or 604-938-6441.

Nordic Twoonies return Dec. 10

The Whistler Nordics are once again planning to host a series of informal races and socials through their Twoonie Race series. The events are open to all groups, and are scheduled for Dec. 10 (weather and conditions permitting) Dec. 17, Jan. 7, Jan. 14, Jan. 21, Jan. 28, Feb. 4, March 2 and March 11. The majority of events will take place around Lost Lake and local golf course trails, although events have been held at Whistler Olympic Park and Callaghan Country trails as well. More information regarding the Dec. 10 race will be posted online at www.whistlernordics.com as it comes available.
