Board members have been meeting for the past three months, developing a new vision, business plan and committee structure for the club. They will present those recommendations at a meeting Wednesday, Oct. 27 at Spruce Grove Field House, starting at 6:45 p.m.
"Since 1982, Whistler Nordics has been a very informal organization," said Tom Barratt, president of the Whistler Nordics volunteer board. "It was mainly for kids and we only ran one event – the Loppett. However, with the 2010 Olympics as a catalyst, several of us felt a responsibility to develop a stronger, more structured organization capable of representing the community in the world of cross-country skiing.
"We also wanted to develop a real club for outdoor sports enthusiasts who are equally interested in socializing."
In addition to attracting new members, the club hopes to form partnerships with other community groups and corporations.
Cheryl Morningstar, the vice-president for the club, believes there is an opportunity to accomplish all of these goals.
"Whistler Nordics is at a critical point in its development. We have the opportunity to really change," she said. "I’m excited at the prospect of the Nordics evolving into a progressive, well-run organization that’s poised for remarkable growth."
In addition to a new operational plan, the club is also looking at new programs, new social events and competitions, and the introduction of coaching and workshops.
All club members and cross-country skiers in the community are welcome to come out to Spruce Grove Field House on Wednesday for a presentation, and to provide their feedback.
