Whistler racers on top at Mars Cup races

Whistler athletes on top

Whistler skiers were among the top racers at the Mars B.C. Grand Prix speed races at Apex last week. The races were open to FIS athletes from across the province, although there were a few competitors from outside B.C. and Canada in the line up.

In the first women’s super G on Thursday, Feb. 9, Kelsey Serwa of Big White took the win, followed by B.C. Ski Team teammate Elli Terweil of Sun Peaks. Whistler’s Victoria Whitney was third, also taking a "most improved" award for her efforts.

Also in the top-15 were Deborah Bayliss in 13 th and Brittany Cameron in 14 th . Katrina Dekur finished in 16 th place and Calindy Ramsden in 18 th .

In the first men’s super G, Whistler Mountain Ski Club coach Jeff Hume posted the top time, followed by James Lowe-Wylde of Lake Louise. Third place went to Ian Cumming of Apex.

Other strong Whistler finishes include Stan Rey in fifth, Michael Kearney in 11th, Ben Podborski in 17 th and Morgan Pridy in 19 th out of 65 starters.

The second women’s super-G podium on Friday was replay of day one, with Whitney picking up her second bronze medal. Brittany McGovern was 15 th .

Lowe-Wylde moved up to the gold spot on day two, while Alberta’s Cory Canart was second and Cumming third.

Stan Rey was the top Whistler skier in sixth, followed by Jeff Hume in seventh and Ben Podborski in 14 th .

The last event was a downhill. This time Terweil edged out Serwa for the gold, while Whitney picked up a third bronze. The WMSC’s Deborah Bayliss was 15 th .

Jeff Hume was the fastest male, while Ben Podborski improved his lot to fourth behind Benjamin Griffin of New Zealand and Edward Parry of Australia.

Stan Rey was ninth, Darren Chaddock 14 th , James McLean 16 th and Michael Kearney 17 th for the WMSC.
