RCMP In Whistler were called to deal with a mob scene this past weekend.

The bar staff at a liquor establishment on London Lane in Creekside became concerned by aggressive patrons that were left standing outside when the establishment reached capacity on Saturday evening, Dec. 8 and contacted the RCMP.

When the police arrived around 10 p.m. to provide support to staff, the crowd started to disperse. However, they saw one individual damage a rack with skis on it.

According to Sergeant Rob Knapton of the Whistler RCMP, the suspect resisted arrest.

"When the suspect was arrested for mischief he chose to resist arrest," said Knapton. "The large crowd then surrounded the officers and verbally encouraged the male to continue to resist. Some people in the crowd attempted to physically assault police and pull the male away, and one individual even attempted to pull an officer's firearm out of his holster."

The RCMP was able to safely remove the mischief suspect, a 23-year-old from Pemberton who now faces charges for mischief, resisting arrest and causing a disturbance.

While they got their man, the RCMP said they were disappointed by the actions of the crowd.

"It is disappointing when something like this happens," said Knapton. "Whistler is a resort community and we want to help ensure a safe experience for all visitors."
