Whistler Reads chooses Rockbound

Earlier this year CBC Radio’s Canada Reads panel chose Rockbound, Frank Parker Day’s classic 1928 novel of Nova Scotia’s south shore, as its 2005 selection.

Now, Rockbound is the first selection for the new Whistler Reads initiative.

Co-ordinated by Whistler’s Paula Shackleton, Whistler Reads is modelled after the Citywide Reads programs in many cities across the country. Every other month a book is selected and read by members of the community, then groups get together to discuss the book at participating coffee shops.

Rockbound will be discussed at Blenz Coffee House on March 29 between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.; at Second Cup April 7 between 7 and 9 p.m.; at Java At Nesters April 9 between 2 and 4 p.m.; and at Starbucks in Marketplace April 14 between 10 a.m. and noon.

The discussions will be supported by trained facilitators. Shackleton is also hoping to entice authors of some of the books chosen to Whistler to speak to Whistler Reads participants.

The whole initiative is organized and co-ordinated through Shackleton’s website, www.bookbuffet.com. Follow the links to Whistler Reads for details. The site also includes links and resources, archives, research links and an online discussion forum. The books are available for purchase through the website or at the participating coffee shops.

The initiative is also aimed at furthering awareness about literacy at a time when Whistler is about to start work on its new library.
