Whistler has been selected as one of the seven greenest communities in the province.

Premier Gordon Campbell announced the recipients of the inaugural Green City Awards at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Vancouver on Wednesday.

According to a press release from the Office of the Premier, the awards recognize “demonstrated leadership and action in a range of environmental sustainability initiatives.”

"This awards program is a challenge to communities to think big; to develop innovative ideas and share those ideas so we can work together to take action on climate change," said Campbell.

Whistler was selected for its “exemplary planning and development that balances protection of the natural environment and tourism economy promotion.”

The seven winning cities — Whistler, Vancouver, North Vancouver, Dawson Creek, Salt Spring Island, Nanaimo, and Oliver — were chosen from a list of 17 finalist communities, and will share in the $500,000 funding award. Whistler will receive $25,000.
